Quick answers
- How much stamp duty will I pay on a £300,000 house?
- Moving home, £5,000. As a first-time buyer, nothing. For a second home or buy-to-let, £20,000.
- Do first-time buyers pay stamp duty?
- Not on the first £300,000. They pay 5% on the part from £300,001 to £500,000. Above £500,000 the relief disappears and the standard rates apply to the whole price.
- Do I pay more stamp duty if I've been living abroad?
- Usually yes: an extra 2% if you were in the UK for fewer than 183 days in the 12 months before buying. If you then spend at least 183 days in the UK in the following 12 months, you may be able to claim it back.
