Baslow is the village at the northern gate of Chatsworth Park, on the River Derwent with Baslow Edge and Curbar Edge rising behind it. It's one of the most sought-after addresses in the Peak, and it doesn't come cheap.

The place

The village grew up in a few clusters. Nether End by the park gates, Bridge End around the old bridge over the Derwent, and Over End climbing the hill. The bridge is centuries old and still has its tiny stone watchman's hut.

Walk out of Nether End and you're in Chatsworth Park in minutes. Walk up the other way and you're on Baslow Edge, with Wellington's Monument and the Eagle Stone and views right down the valley.

The homes

Mostly gritstone. Cottages and terraces in the old village, substantial Victorian and Edwardian houses on the edges, and some later family homes along Calver Road and around Derwent Drive.

Prices vary more than almost anywhere we cover. Calver Road is where you'll find the more affordable homes, while Derwent Drive and Over Lane are among the most expensive streets in the village.

Worth knowing

Baslow is inside the Peak District National Park, so extensions, alterations and new building need consent from the National Park Authority, and much of the village is a conservation area.

Some homes in the National Park carry a local occupancy restriction, which limits who can buy them. Every listing should tell you clearly whether one applies. Derbyshire Dales also charges extra council tax on second homes, so check before you buy one as a weekend place.
