Darley Dale stretches along the A6 and the River Derwent just north of Matlock. It's quieter than Matlock, flatter than most of the Peak, and has a good choice of family homes within a few minutes of the town.
The place
St Helen's Church at Churchtown has a yew tree in its churchyard thought to be one of the oldest in England. The Whitworth Centre, built with money left by the engineer Sir Joseph Whitworth, is still the hub of the community, and the Peak Rail heritage line stops at Darley Dale station.
Two Dales sits on the hillside to the west, and the moors and woods above give plenty of walking.
The homes
Stone houses and terraces along the old roads, 20th-century semis and bungalows, and newer estates. Weavers Road, a newer development, has seen more sales than any other street.
Many of the flats here are at St Elphins Park, the former girls' school now run as a retirement village, which is why flats sell for more than you might expect.
Worth knowing
Darley Dale is outside the National Park, so planning goes through Derbyshire Dales District Council. Highfields School in Matlock is the nearest secondary.
The valley floor is close to the Derwent, and the Environment Agency has flood warning areas at Darley Dale, Churchtown and Darley Bridge. Check the long-term flood risk for any home on the lower ground.
